The rabies outbreak was identified in the Zatsarevye area of Astrakhan due to the confirmed diagnosis of rabies in one of the domestic cats, it was reported on February 19 at the city’s veterinary station.
In the Zatsarevye region of Astrakhan, it was quarantined for 60 days within a radius of 500 meters from the place where the sick animal was detected.
According to the regional veterinary service, the reason for the introduction of the quarantine was a cat whose corpse was found in Gubkin Lane. Laboratory tests on a biological sample taken showed that the animal suffered from rabies.
During these two months, susceptible animals in the danger zone will be monitored and the public will be informed. Veterinary staff will also vaccinate tailed and baleen animals and, to prevent the spread of the virus, will destroy all rodents.
The quarantine area will also be closed to homeless animals. Workers must ensure that no stray dogs or cats accidentally end up near the source of infection.
