Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool player, mentioned the Benfica coach among candidates to succeed German Jurgen Klopp as coach of the English club in a statement to Redman TV.
Top of the list continues to be Spaniard Xabi Alonso, who currently leads the German football league’s top-ranked team, Bayer Leverkusen. In his second season at English club Brighton, Italian Roberto De Zerbi is also a target for the Reds. Sporting coach Ruben Amorim is another name in the top 3.
But according to former centre-back Jamie Carragher, the Benfica manager’s name is also on the table. “I’ve heard of Roger Schmidt,” he assured.
The former England international has praised the style of play promoted by the Reds manager. “I think he has a connection with the Red Bull school. When people mention him, they almost always say that his style of play is similar to Klopp’s.
Jamie Carragher sees Roger Schmidt as a succession option. “He fitted in well with the club and there was no need to change much,” he said.
On January 26, Jurgen Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season.
