Britain this Wednesday imposed sanctions on six leaders of the Arctic penal colony where Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died on Friday, according to a report. Reuters.
According to British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, those sanctioned will be banned from entering the UK and their assets will be frozen.
“It is clear that the Russian authorities viewed Navalny as a threat and repeatedly tried to silence him. No one should doubt the repressive nature of the Russian system,” the minister said. He also adds that those responsible “should be under no illusions” as they will be brought to justice.
David Cameron vowed to take action on the issue on Saturday, and London summoned the Russian ambassador to make clear he held Russian authorities “fully responsible” for the death of Alexei Navalny.
Western countries also expressed outrage this week at Russian authorities’ news that Navalny had collapsed and died in prison.
Russia, which has denied involvement in the death of its 47-year-old opponent, said Britain’s interference in the Russian country’s affairs was “unacceptable.”
