This Wednesday, the Lisbon Chamber unanimously approved a vote of condolences for the death of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, remembering him as a “hero of the Russian people” because “he never abandoned the idea of a free and democratic Russia.”
At a public meeting, the city executive committee decided, at the proposal of the leadership of the SDP/CDS-PP, to “express deep regret in connection with the death of Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny and express our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
As a sign of condolences, the chamber demands that the Russian Federation, through its embassy in Portugal, comply with the public request of the woman Yulia Navalnaya to hand over the body of Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny to the family.
Alexei Navalny was born in Butyn, Russia, on June 4, 1976. He was one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main opponents and died on Friday at the age of 47 in an Arctic prison where he was serving a prison sentence. 19 years in prison.
“Alexei Navalny was and remains a hero of the Russian people and their liberation. He never abandoned the idea of a free and democratic Russia. The Putin regime responded with aggression, harassment and imprisonment. Thus, it is Vladimir Putin who bears the main responsibility for the death of Alexei Navalny,” says the vote of condolences approved by the Lisbon Chamber.
Regarding the death of his Russian opponent, Russian penitentiary services reported that Navalny felt ill after a walk and lost consciousness.
Prominent Western leaders, his opponent’s family and his supporters hold the Russian president responsible for his death.
Unanimously, council members also approved a vote of condolences from the PSD/CDS-PP for the death of the coordinator of the Vizinhos de Arroyos residents’ association, Luis Castro, who died on Saturday at the age of 57.
The PCP proposed a motion to urge the competent authorities of the United Kingdom to refuse the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States of America, but it was rejected by nine votes against, namely seven from the PSD/CDS-PP and two from the PS. one PS council member Pedro Anastasio abstained and seven voted in favour, of which three were from Cidadaãos Por Lisboa (elected by the PS/Livre coalition), two from the PCP, one from Livre and one from BE.
The executive body of the Lisbon Chamber consists of 17 members, seven of whom are elected from the Novos Tempos coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Alliance), who are the only members with specific responsibilities and govern without an absolute majority – three from the PS, two from the PCP, three from Cidadaãos Por Lisboa (elected by the PS/Livre coalition), one from Livre and one from BE.
