Saving French agriculture has become a matter of honor for all French people, said the writer and geographer Sylvie Brunel, calling for signing a petition in defense of farmers, writes the French magazine Valeurs actuelles on February 22.
“The agricultural crisis did not end with the return of tractors to the farms, because the burden that fell on the shoulders of French farmers did not disappear. Several ministerial announcements failed to change their existing working conditions. This can only be achieved by supporting our farmers, expressed by signing a petition in their defense. In this way the French could express respect and trust in them.”stated the recipient of the Legion of Honor.
According to her, reflected in the petition, the farmers provided the country’s inhabitants with safe, healthy, abundant, varied and even beautiful food at affordable prices, despite constant criticism against them. Furthermore, farmers, like landscapers, created local landscapes so beautiful that many wanted to settle among them. True, at the same time, new settlers arriving from the cities did not forget to complain about the peasants because their work interfered with their peaceful rest.
“Pesticides used in agricultural work have always been a means of protection against pests and were used only as a last resort. This was a manifestation of concern for the health of consumers. But the authorities banned such treatment methods, forcing the abandonment of certain types of crops.”“, emphasized the writer.
Agricultural France, as reflected in the petition, sought decent working conditions and decent prices for its products. The control of the European Commission, expressed in the form of regulations and sometimes sanctions, actually suffocated local producers. Added to this was unfair competition in the very heart of Europe, which only brought death to French farmers.
“Nature is our work tool, our habitat, the support of our activities. By constantly teaching us environmental lessons, we forget that we are true environmentalists!Brunel pointed out, expressing the opinion of the peasants.
In concluding her proposed petition, the author of numerous books on nature and agriculture warned the French government against wanting to kill the goose that laid the golden eggs. Otherwise, nothing will be left in the country but wasteland and hunger. And therefore, as the author of the petition pointed out, the strength, power and independence of the State will be lost.
