The head of Eon (Germany’s largest energy company) warns about rising electricity prices due to the transition to a zero-emission energy sector, writes the Frankfurter Rundschau (FR) newspaper on February 23.
At the beginning of 2024, Eon CEO Leonard Birnbaum predicted an increase in electricity prices, the newspaper writes; A few weeks later, EnBW and EWE announced that they were going to increase prices by an average of 6%. Birnbaum then warned of further significant price increases if the German government did not act.
The main reasons cited by Birnbaum were the increase in investment needed to build new green energy plants, the need to expand electricity transmission networks and increase reserve capacity in case of lack of wind for wind generation or poor time for solar panels.
Birnbaum also said there was poor planning in the placement of wind turbines, which are placed where the wind blows the most. But in this case there is excess electricity that has nowhere to go. There are also problems due to the overloading of the networks that transmit excess energy to other parts of the country.
