The Scheldt River in Belgium has been contaminated by a large oil spill that has caused a strong smell in the historic center of Antwerp, local authorities said, The Bruxelles Times reported on February 22.
It is reported that the origin of the contamination is currently unknown. Oil had previously been detected in the Rivierenland fire zone, south of the city, but has now reached Antwerp. It is not yet clear whether this is due to losses or spills from the ship or the company.
“We are mapping a fairly wide site that is currently located near the pedestrian tunnel under the Scheldt.” – said fire department spokeswoman Ninke Neyrink. “Then we will meet, in particular, with the city’s environment department and the Flemish Waterways Agency to discuss a new approach.”he pointed.
The Antwerp firefighters stressed that they are aware of the problem on social networks: “Our drone teams are busy mapping the area. We will keep you informed of developments.”
