Mariana Mortagua’s grandmother never received an eviction letter.

The grandmother of Mariana Mortagua, coordinator of the Bloc de Esquerda, has not received any eviction order from the apartment where she has lived for decades on Avenida de Roma in Lisbon, Sábado magazine reported on Thursday. However, the bloc leader sticks to his version of history.

Mortagua’s grandmother’s landlord, the Octavio Maria de Oliveira Foundation, a private social solidarity institution in the municipality of Tabua, sent letters only asking for the rent to be updated within the limit set in the so-called “Christas Law,” which protects people of equal age or over 65, said same source.

The letters “were always ordinary, with requests for legal adjustments, in accordance with the coefficient provided by law, but little things… 1%, these are the values. There were never any letters that could frighten anyone,” said a source associated with the Octavio Maria de Oliveira Foundation.

Another source cited by Sabado also explained that in the area where Mortagua’s grandmother lived, “old lace [anteriores a 1990] which reach higher values are around [atualmente] 400 and a few euros.”

Regarding the information published this Thursday, which she attributes to a “far right campaign,” the BE leader said: “I have said and claimed that my grandmother was 80 years old when she discovered that at 85 her income could jump. “

Articles 35 and 36 of Law No. 31/2012 of 14 August “New Urban Rental Regime” limited rent increases for people aged 65 and over or with 60% disability, but after five years this was allowed in some cases with the possibility of a higher level increases.

This hypothesis is contradicted by Law No. 30/2018 of July 16, an emergency regime for the protection of older people or people with disabilities who have lived in the same house for more than 15 years.

Therefore, Mortagua said this Thursday that the rent increase “would have occurred if this invention had not suspended the application of the law.”

The matter came up during the debate
The case arose during a debate with Luis Montenegro of the PSD. “I remember the rent law where older people would get a letter and if they didn’t respond within 30 days, their rent would be raised and they could get kicked out. [….]. I saw my grandmother start […]because I didn’t know what would happen to him,” said Mariana Mortagua.

Tax benefits of 10,000 euros for the landlord
Mariana Mortagua’s grandmother’s homeowner received tax benefits of €10,536 in 2022, according to the latest data from the Tax Administration (AT). The Octavio Maria de Oliveira Foundation was recognized as a private institute for social solidarity (IPSS) in July 1999, and Rui Cunha was Secretary of State for Social Inclusion.
The biggest benefit relates to the IMI, worth €7,585, which will relate to the headquarters located in Quinta da Ramalosa, in the municipality of Tabua. In terms of IRC, the benefit amounted to 2950.65 euros.

What has never been done with salaries
Mariana Mortagua reinstated this Thursday the phrase that singer Pedro Abrunosa calls his own, declaring: “We represent ourselves in this election and also in this area.” [da contratação coletiva e salários]to do what has never been done, to do what the vast majority refused to do, against inequality and exploitation.”
The BE leader wants to “restore collective bargaining, end the unilateral termination of collective labor regulation instruments and restore the principle of more favorable treatment.”
