This Friday, the Minister of National Defense said that assistance to Ukraine, after almost two years of conflict, cannot fail, despite other “acute crises”, stressing that no one can feel safe until the war is over.
“We know that other pressing crises around the world require our attention and our action. But we must be consistent and, therefore, we cannot let the people of Ukraine down. Therefore, together, together, we must remain steadfast in our support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” defended Helena Carreiras.
The Portuguese minister spoke at the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on the “situation in the temporarily occupied territories” of Ukraine, which is taking place this Friday in New York, in the United States of America.
In her speech in English, Helena Carreiras noted that “the remarkable resilience of Ukrainian men and women and their will to win is an inspiration to the world and a lesson to the aggressor.”
However, he warned, “the consequences of this war are not limited to Europe.”
“Russia’s aggression has a direct impact on the global food, energy and financial crises, having a serious impact on the most vulnerable countries. The role of the UN Secretary-General in mitigating these consequences has proven invaluable. But this situation cannot be tolerated, and we will continue to support all collective efforts in this direction,” he assured.
The minister emphasized that the discussion under consideration “concerns not only Ukraine,” and what is at stake is “the protection of respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.”
“We cannot stand by while the most fundamental principles of law and order and international security are grossly disrespected. None of us can feel safe until this war is over,” he said.
This can only happen, he added, “with a comprehensive and fair solution that is consistent with the Charter of the United Nations and the Ukrainian peace formula,” which does not lose sight of “the occupied territories of Crimea and Donbass since 2014.” “.
“Let me be very clear: we do not recognize these illegal attempts at annexation. Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson are part of Ukraine,” he stressed.
Helena Carreiras recalled that it is “ten years since the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia and two years since Russia’s total invasion of Ukraine.”
“On this somber date, we cannot and will not fail to reaffirm our strong and unwavering condemnation of Russia’s unprovoked, illegal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law for which it must bear full responsibility.” , he emphasized.
Regarding support for Portugal, Helena Carreiras emphasized that since the beginning of the Russian invasion, on February 24, 2022, Portugal has clearly been on the side of Ukraine.
“Our support is comprehensive, be it at the political, financial, humanitarian or military level. We will continue to help the courageous Armed Forces of Ukraine realize their legitimate right to self-defense from illegal aggression. “We welcome almost 60,000 refugees to Portugal, while we focus on reconstruction efforts, as is the case with the public school system in the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr,” he said.
