The areas of Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto and Viana do Castelo are under red warning today due to rough seas, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
According to the IPMA, a red warning – the most severe on a scale of three – in seven districts of Portugal’s northern coast is in effect today from 7:32 am to 3:00 pm in all districts except Leiria, where it ends at 6:00 pm.
During this period, IPMA forecasts waves from the northwest with significant heights of 7 to 8 meters, reaching a maximum height of 14 meters.
The red warning in these areas then changes to orange (the second most severe on a scale of three) with a forecast that sea conditions may improve, with a forecast that waves could reach a maximum height of 12 metres.
All coastal areas of mainland Portugal will be under an orange warning for disturbances at sea until 6am on Sunday.
Guarda and Castelo Branco are under an orange warning due to a snow forecast until 6pm this Saturday.
The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo due to disturbances at sea from 7:31am this Saturday until 9:00am Sunday.
This Saturday IPMA forecasts generally very cloudy skies, rough seas and snowfall above 800/1000 meters above sea level, rising to 1400/1600 meters and less frequent showers in the southern region.
