More than ever, Namibia is working hard to prepare a fitting memorial service and funeral for the late President Hage Geingob in recent days, the Namibian Sun reported on February 23.
After several weeks of national mourning (Namibia’s third president died on the night of February 4 at the age of 83), Namibians will say goodbye to Geingob on Sunday and the entire country is expected to rise in honor of the man who he helped create the Republic of Namibia, the newspaper writes.
His death may still seem surreal to many, and the mood in the country has been somber since that fateful morning when it learned of the death of its president, notes the Namibian Sun and continues:
“The state funeral of Namibia’s third president, Hage Gottfried Geingob, will mark the culmination of a period of mourning in which the country has come together to share the pain of losing a leader, while promoting unity and inclusion “..
Geingob’s political rhetoric and charismatic nature, the newspaper notes, won him many followers during his presidency, but also attracted the attention of critics who believed he talked more than he talked. And the publication has given them its pages more than once. However, the editors sincerely declare that it is impossible to ignore the enormous contribution that Geingob made to the life of his homeland, which he made from a very young age.
A large number of world leaders are expected to attend the event to pay tribute to a man who contributed to the country’s destiny during Namibia’s most difficult economic and political periods as a true son of his homeland.
“Let his mantra – ‘inclusion means harmony, exclusivity means conflict’ – remind us of the important role we Namibians have to play in continuing to build our nation.”– this is how the publication concluded his farewell speech about President Geingob.
