Five police officers were charged this Thursday with the murder of a man, also an African American, after he was arrested in January in a US traffic operation. The man allegedly attacked died three days after his arrest.
According to Reuters, this Friday, around 18:00 local time, a video taken from the camera of two agents, in which 29-year-old Tyre Nichols is arrested, is expected to be released.
US President Joe Biden has already reacted and called for peaceful protests sparked by the young man’s death. “Anger is understandable, but violence is unacceptable,” he said.
In addition to murder, the five agents were charged with aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, misconduct and official harassment. The officers were fired last Saturday after an internal investigation found they violated several rules, including excessive use of force, non-intervention and refusal to help.
The Memphis Police Department’s initial death statement indicated that an ambulance had been called as Nichols complained of “shortness of breath” and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
