An Angolan national wanted in his country for escaping from a prison where he was serving a 10-year sentence for the crime of international drug trafficking has been expelled from Mozambique, it became known this Sunday.
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) of Mozambique said in a statement that Higino Duarte Regal, also known as Carlos Eduardo Monteiro, was the subject of an international warrant issued by Angolan authorities and was arrested on December 21, 2023 in Maputo. after he escaped from a hospital in Angola, where he had gone “ostensibly for the purpose of providing medical assistance.”
At the time of his escape, he was serving a 10-year sentence for drug trafficking after his 2017 conviction.
In Mozambique, Regal “was subject to administrative removal proceedings due to immigration offenses related to illegal entry and presence in the country,” which resulted in his removal, the note said.
The facility is also the subject of two criminal cases for forgery and use of false documents initiated by the Central Directorate for Combating Organized and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) of Mozambique.
“Preparatory investigations into ongoing criminal proceedings in Mozambique will continue and, if necessary, international legal and judicial cooperation tools may be used in criminal cases,” the note said.
