The construction of high-rise buildings at a tourist complex on the Curonian Spit will lead to a mass death of birds, believes the Expert Council on Nature Reserves, the online publication “Kaliningrad Information and Analysis Portal” reports on February 26 , citing a letter. of scientists to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
A copy of the letter is available to the publication’s editors. The letter refers to a tourist complex planned to be built in the village of Rybachye. The project consists of the creation of an artificial land in the waters of the Curonian Lagoon, on which a hotel up to 21 meters high will be built.
The proposed construction site is located on the bird migration route from the White Sea to the Baltic. The construction of high-rise buildings with a large number of glass surfaces and bright lighting is proposed in the areas immediately adjacent to the central part of the Curonian Spit, in the place of greatest concentration of migratory birds. According to experts, such a construction. “will inevitably lead to mass bird deaths”.
“This aspect is not reflected in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) materials prepared”– he said in the appeal.
Experts write that the investment project will have “a significant negative impact on the natural, historical and cultural complexes of the national park and should not be implemented in the presented form”. The authors of the appeal ask the Ministry to take this information into account when coordinating economic activities. Additionally, the letter requests that the water resources agency consider this information when deciding whether to grant a permit for the creation of land in the bay.
The publication reminds that at the end of 2022 the Spetsavtotrans company began preparatory work on the Rybachy coast. On the territory, part of the old buildings of the collective fish farm “Trabajador del Mar” were dismantled. The project was examined by the scientific and technical council; The investors planned to start construction directly in November 2023.
