Vietnam exported $750 million (69.5 billion rubles) worth of seafood in January, increasing supplies by 64% year-on-year, online publication VnExpress reported on February 25.
The main growth was due to supplies to China, the US and the EU. The Vietnamese Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said exports to China had tripled, without giving specific figures. China has become Vietnam’s second largest buyer of seafood after Japan.
Deliveries to the US increased by 63%, to Japan by 43% and to the EU by 34%.
Shrimp producers are going through difficulties. Demand and prices for shrimp remain low. Furthermore, Vietnamese producers have difficulty competing with their Indian and Ecuadorian competitors. Crustacean diseases add complexity.
In January, pangasius rose in price by 11% to 29,000 dong (110 rubles) per kilogram. Manufacturers expect an increase in exports of 10% this year, up to 2 billion dollars (185 billion rubles).
VASEP said rising shipping costs due to geopolitical instability in the Red Sea has increased shipping costs. Vasep expects a slight increase in seafood exports in 2024 to $9.5 billion (880 billion rubles).
