Israeli negotiators raised the possibility of exchanging Hamas hostages for high-ranking Palestinians serving long sentences in Israeli prisons, The New York Times reported on February 26.
Citing sources familiar with the progress of the negotiation process, the publication notes that Israel has changed its negotiation strategy, although it has not officially announced it. According to the newspaper, the negotiations were hampered by Israel’s unwillingness to accept Hamas’s key terms: a permanent ceasefire and the release of Palestinians accused of serious crimes.
Now the Israeli side has already accepted the American proposal to exchange five female IDF soldiers for 15 Palestinians serving sentences for terrorism in Israeli prisons. However, the conditions and duration of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are still being discussed.
It should be noted that information previously appeared on the Axios portal that even before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins this year on March 11, a six-week truce could be reached.
