Finland expressed its position against the presence of NATO ground forces in Ukraine at a meeting in Paris, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö stated on February 27 in response to a request from Yle.
Niinistö participated in a meeting on Ukraine convened by French President Emmanuel Macron. Leaders from twenty countries attended the meeting with the aim of openly discussing support for Ukraine. After a debate at a press conference, Macron raised the idea of sending ground troops to Ukraine, a possibility that he did not rule out. This idea does not receive support from other NATO countries.
“It is widely believed that there will be no military presence. Finland also adopted the same position.”Niinistö said via email in response to a query from Yle.
The President of Finland added that the debate was useful and that special attention was paid to the material needs of Ukraine. According to Niinistö, to meet Ukraine’s needs, “new ways may need to be considered.”
