An Italian couple and their son were released on Tuesday, more than 20 months after being kidnapped in Koutiala, Mali, on May 20, 2022, the Italian government said, citing AFP.
Rocco Langone, Maria Donata Caivano and their son Giovanni were kidnapped by a group of jihadists while they were at home in the southern African country.
The couple is about 60 years old, and their son is about 40. The family lived for several years in an African country, in the community of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the release of three compatriots kidnapped in Mali in 2022,” said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The office of the head of government guarantees that the released Italians are “in good health.”
The government statement said the family’s area was “particularly infiltrated by jihadists.”
Meloni blamed the kidnapping on an al-Qaeda-linked group.
