Seven of the top 10 food companies offer unhealthy products for sale in the UK, all using packaging that is highly attractive to children, a University of Oxford study found, Green Queen reported on February 27.
In the UK, one in three children is overweight or even somewhat obese by the time they leave primary school. Almost a million children in the country suffer from type 2 diabetes. However, 95% of children exceed the recommended daily amount of sugar and 66% eat too much salt. And only 9% satisfy their needs for fruits and vegetables.
The study, titled Feed Us, Don’t Fool Us, analyzed the sales of 10 of the UK’s leading food and drink companies to find out who profits from unhealthy products. Foods rich in fat, sugar or salt were studied.
The 10 companies studied by Bite Back (Ferrero, Mondelez International, Unilever, Kellogg’s, Mars, Nestlé, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Kraft Heinz and Danone) are producers of some of the most popular packaged food and beverage products. The report found that in 2022, the majority of sales for seven of these 10 companies came from foods classified as the least healthy.
