Taiwan’s coast guard said Thursday it would not apologize for the deaths of two Chinese fishermen off the Kinmen Islands, arguing that its personnel acted “in accordance with the law” while pursuing the boat they were on.
“The Coast Guard performs its functions in accordance with the law. Based on objective evidence from the ongoing investigation, Coast Guard personnel are not responsible. [pelas mortes] and therefore there is no written apology,” Coast Guard Patrol Division Chief Liao Yung-hong said at a press conference.
The statement came a day after Beijing demanded an explanation from Taipei over the Feb. 14 incident in which two of the four crew members of a Chinese fishing vessel died after being chased by the Taiwanese coast guard in Kinmen waters.
