According to Carma research published this Thursday, World Youth Days (WYD) was the topic covered the most in the media last year, and António Costa was the national figure with the most mentions in the press and online.
In the list of the five most covered topics, GYM leads the way (35,000 mentions), followed by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (24,000), TAP compensation (19,000), early elections (10,000) and the resignation of Prime Minister Antonio Costa. (5000).
Regarding national figures, António Costa takes first place with 23,000 mentions, followed by the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (15,000), former minister João Galamba (15,000), former TAP manager Alexandra Reis (11,000) and former minister Pedro Nuno Santos (9000).
Luis Montenegro (PSD) and André Ventura (Chega) “are the opposition leaders who received the most press coverage, with a slight advantage for the PSD leader,” both with 4,000 mentions, the study says, below Fernando Medina (7,000).
José Luis Carneiro is in eighth place with 3,000 mentions, followed by Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas (3,000), who “is the only mayor to be in the ‘top ten'”, ahead of Mariana Mortagua of the Bloc of the Left (BE), since 2000.
The study is “based on the use of Carma technology and data collected through automated means” between January 1 and December 31, 2023.
“118,043 articles were recorded covering the main events of 2023, as well as the individuals who received the most media coverage, published in online and Portuguese press sources,” the study says.
Since WYD was the topic that received the most coverage in the media, and in terms of international names, the most attention in this segment was given to Pope Francis with 21,000 mentions, followed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (5,000), President of Russia, Vladimir Putin (4,000), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (3,000) and US President Joe Biden (2,000).
The study also shows that the days with the most coverage in the Portuguese press were August 3 (the arrival of Pope Francis in Portugal) and November 7 in the online press (the resignation of António Costa).
An analysis of the most popular media topics over several months found that in 2023, “there were three topics that were mentioned most often”: TAP compensation, GYP and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
For Filipe Pereira, CEO of Carma CPLP, it is only natural that WYD was highlighted in the press and online news last year, especially given the themes created around the topic, such as the infrastructure created for this purpose and its economic impact.
“There was a lot of emphasis on WYD at a certain point in time,” in addition to it being “considered unique,” he added.
In the case of António Costa, it was “the moment of his dismissal that created a wave of information in the country,” which ultimately led to wider coverage, he emphasized.
The five news stories with the most positive coverage are: WYD (71%), Pope Francis (70%), Titan submarine (54%), Finland’s NATO membership (51%) and Marcelo Rebelo de Souza (44%).
In terms of negative coverage, news about Netayahu (60%), the arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin (51%), the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (50%), Vladimir Putin (43%) and Yevgeny Prigozhin (43%) stand out.
According to the index of news favorability of Portuguese politicians, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa leads the way (44%), followed by António Costa (40%) and Pedro Nuno Santos (36%).
Conversely, Joao Galamba had 37% negative coverage, followed by Fernando Medina (32%).
This is “an X-ray of what was covered in the media in 2023,” concluded Filipe Pereira.
