Six priests publicly wished death on Pope Francis on talk show YouTubeFebruary 22, La Voz de Galicia. These statements have since become the subject of several comments on social media. The program is called “La Sacristía de la Vendée” and bills itself as a “counter-revolutionary priestly talk show.”
According to the Spanish newspaper, during the broadcast, host Francisco José Delgado greeted the others, and one of the priests, Gabriel Calvo Sarrote, said he was praying a lot “for the Pope so that he can get to heaven as soon as possible.” Another priest, Charles Murr , added, “Many of us are praying for Bergoglio’s ascension to heaven.” And the moderator ended with, “Let’s see if we can pray more.” All the comments were accompanied by laughter.
After all the controversy, the talk show apologized via the social network X (formerly Twitter): “We regret the unfortunate comment made in a humorous tone (…).”
In accordance with La Voz de GaliciaThe Archbishop of Toledo also issued a statement in which he rejected the statements made and did not rule out the possibility of taking corrective measures, and also asked the priests in question to apologize.
Last January, a group of priests, including the program’s moderator, launched a petition against the pope’s statement allowing blessings for gay couples or divorced people.
