Judges, prosecutors and court officials in cases related to Donald Trump are facing a wave of threats, the agency reported this Thursday. Reuters.
Since the former President of the United States of America (USA) began his first election campaign in 2015, the average number of threats and hostile messages directed at the number of judges, prosecutors and court staff more than tripled: from 1,180 in the previous decade to 3,810. Despite these numbers, only 57 federal cases of threats against judges have been successful since 2020.
Judge Royce Lambert Washington has taken over the case against supporters of Donald Trump who attacked the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden. After sentencing a 69-year-old woman who admitted to participating in the January 2021 riots to prison, the judge’s inbox was filled with death threats. Authorities found the author of the threats, but others emerged from “ordinary people who would not be suspected,” Royce Lambert described.
Since the end of Donald Trump’s term, courts have rejected dozens of election fraud lawsuits filed by allies of the former US president. John Trainum, the former head of the unit responsible for investigating judicial threats, said that whenever a case involving Donald Trump went to trial, “there was a clear increase in the number of threats against any judge who heard the case.”
At least ten judges and four prosecutors have been threatened and harassed, including state judges who disqualified the former US president from the November presidential election. In Colorado, they received hoax calls that drew police to their homes. There are no reports of any arrests.
Last Friday, Donald Trump was fined €329 million for corporate fraud. The trial in the case of alleged payment to a former porn actress to conceal an extramarital affair will begin on March 25.
The US presidential elections are scheduled for November 5th. The campaign of Donald Trump, the front-runner in the Republican primary, plans to ignore his opponent Nikki Haley after his victory in South Carolina.
