Ireland’s deer hunting season has been extended to help “control” deer numbers, online publication Agriland reported on February 29.
Changes to the Open Deer Hunting Season Order allow hunting for female and antlerless deer to continue through March 31, 2024, and for male deer through April 30, 2024. Deer Hunting Season 2024/2025 will also start earlier than usual, on August 1, 2024.
The review of the open deer hunting season order responds to a key recommendation from Ireland’s deer management strategy group, according to Minister for Nature Malcolm Noonan and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue .
Noonan stated: “Deer are an integral part of the Irish landscape, but overgrazing has put significant pressure on native forests and moors across Ireland.”. The Minister of Agriculture, for his part, stressed that it has become evident that in some parts of the country the number already exceeds “sustainable level for land management activities and their impacts on agriculture, forestry, conservation and biodiversity”.
“There is no doubt that wild deer populations have a significant impact on farmers. “Grasslands are being plundered and our forestry is suffering from overgrazing, impeding recovery.”McConalogue added.
