VAT fraud accounts for 11.5 billion euros and almost 60% of the losses caused to community funds in investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which warns of a lack of funds to fight criminal organizations conceived as companies.
According to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) activity report for 2023, published this Friday, the organization opened 1,371 investigations in 2023, bringing the total number of ongoing investigations to 1,927, representing a financial loss for the European Union estimated at 19. €2 billion, 59% of which relates to VAT fraud.
Despite this, the EPPO succeeded in obtaining a court order to freeze assets totaling €1.5 billion.
