Angolan State Ministry judges paralyze services but deny it’s a strike

Magistrates of the Angolan Public Prosecutor’s Office this Friday paralyzed the work of the services, demanding better working conditions and remuneration, denying that it was a strike, the president of the National Union of Prosecutors (SNMMP) told Lusa.

Adelino Fansoni said there are 643 prosecutors in the country, and about a fifth of them are not affiliated with a union, “so they are free to join the strike or not.”

The union leader said that “most judges are paralyzed.”

According to the president of SNMMP, this is not a strike yet, but simply a stop of services.

“We can reach this stage if the subjects do not give in. Our complaint is legitimate,” he assured.

A source from the Association of Judges of Angola confirmed to Lusa that the hearings are being postponed to the 8th of this month due to the strike.

This Friday, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the 2024 judicial year, which took place in Luanda, the Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Gros, stressed that judges cannot go on strike.

“I still don’t have information about how things are going in the Prosecutor General’s Office, but one thing is for sure: they cannot go on strike,” he said, emphasizing that “judges are not above the law.”

“If they commit malfeasance, we will have to act accordingly,” he stressed, pointing out that the matter would have to be analyzed by the Supreme Council of the Prosecutor’s Office, the body that deals with the discipline of judges.

The DPR of Angola also added that “the situation in which the judges of the prosecutor’s office find themselves is the same as the situation in which the judicial judges find themselves.”

The Association of Judges of Angola (AJA) expressed solidarity and support for the suspension of the judges of the prosecutor’s office, which began this Friday until the 8th.

In a note of support from the National Union of Judges of Public Prosecutions (SNMMP), AJA called on the competent authorities to meet “the legitimate demands of judges of public prosecutions in a manner that gives real value and importance to this fundamental organ of the judiciary.” Angola system.
