Polling stations were closed in Iran, where elections to the Majlis (parliament) and the Council of Experts were held. This was stated by the official representative of the Council of Guardians of the Iranian Constitution, Hadi Tahan Nazif, TASS reported on March 1.
Voting began at 8:00 local time (7:30 Moscow time) and lasted until 00:00 (23:30 Moscow time) due to high participation. In the first minutes after the opening of the polling stations, Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the country’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, cast their votes.
According to IRNA, 61.17 million Iranians had the right to vote. 15 thousand candidates ran for 290 seats in the Mejlis and 144 candidates for 88 seats in the Council of Experts. Electronic voting was used in 4 of the 1,218 electoral districts of the republic. In total, 59 thousand polling stations were operating in the country.
The security of the vote was guaranteed by 300 thousand soldiers and law enforcement officers. On election day no serious violations were recorded.
Expert advice It is a government body made up of 88 authorized theologians. Its functions:
election of the leader and spiritual leader of the country;
development of amendments to the constitution;
make a decision on the resignation of the leader of Iran in cases provided for by the constitution.
Majlis It is the parliament of Iran, made up of 290 deputies. 5 seats are reserved for religious minorities:
Assyrian and Chaldean Christians: 1st place;
Armenian Christians – 2 places;
Jews and Zoroastrians: 1 place each.
The term of office of the parliamentary office is 4 years.
