The ports of the Astrakhan region occupied the leading positions in cargo transportation in the Caspian Sea, the regional Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy Ilya Volynsky reported on March 1, the governor’s press service reports.
“For the first time, the Astrakhan port took first place among Russian ports on the Caspian Sea in terms of cargo volume, surpassing the port of Makhachkala”the official said.
Volynsky recalled that in 2023, 4.5 million tons of cargo passed through the regional ports of Astrakhan and Olya, that is, one and a half times more than the previous year. The minister also stated that 90% of the cargo passing through Astrakhan ports is transported to Iran.
It should be noted that in 2023 the cargo turnover in Russian seaports increased by 5%. At the same time, the ports of the Caspian Sea – by 30%.
Let us remember that the ports of the Astrakhan region are key in the “North-South” international transport corridor, which gained a “second wind” in 2022 after the West imposed economic sanctions against the Russian Federation.
