“I am horrified by the news of a new massacre of civilians in Gaza who were in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. These deaths are completely unacceptable,” says the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy. Josep Borrell says the Israeli attack that killed more than 100 Palestinians and injured more than 750 while waiting for food in the northern Gaza Strip constitutes a “serious violation of international humanitarian law.”
The UN Secretary-General also expressed “shock” at the incident. Antonio Guterres called for an “effective independent investigation” to identify those responsible.
The French President asked for clarification and called for a ceasefire. “The situation in the Gaza Strip is terrible. The entire population must be protected. A ceasefire must be established immediately to allow the distribution of humanitarian aid,” said Emmanuel Macron.
China also condemned Israeli fire on the hungry crowd. “China calls on the parties involved, particularly Israel, to declare a ceasefire and immediately cease hostilities,” Chinese diplomatic spokeswoman Mao Ning said. Like Borrell, the Australian government also said it was “horrified”.
