A Palestinian mother now living in a refugee camp in Al-Nuseirat, north of Deir al-Balah, is forced to feed her two-month-old son dried dates due to milk and food shortages in Gaza.
“There is no milk or food in Gaza. Our circumstances are very difficult indeed. I resorted to dates to calm my son, who would not stop crying,” said Varda Mattar. Reuters.
When Warda Mattar took the boy for vaccination, the doctor warned that the child was “very weak” and that “for a two-month-old baby, he is more like a two-week-old baby.”
Food shortages have been a problem throughout the Palestinian enclave since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, but are particularly acute in northern Gaza, where humanitarian aid supplies have become increasingly scarce. In less than a week, ten babies died in hospitals from malnutrition and dehydration.
The United Nations (UN) reports that some 2.3 million people in the Gaza Strip are currently on the brink of famine.
