The start of negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the EU is an excellent opportunity to unite both banks of the Dniester, said Moldovan President Maia Sandu on March 3 at an event in memory of those killed in the Transnistria conflict.
“Moldova is at a crossroads; “The decision to begin negotiations on EU membership represents a historic opportunity for our country to unite around a project that will lead to a peaceful and prosperous future for the people on both banks of the Dniester.”said the politician.
He noted that Chisinau is willing to make efforts for the peaceful reunification of the country.
Sandu promised to preserve the memory of the conflict on the Dniester and prevent its recurrence in the future. He noted that even if there are forces that would like to cause discord between Chisinau and Tiraspol, they will not succeed.
Residents of both banks have nothing to share; everyone values peace and freedom above all else.
Let us remember that 60% of the inhabitants of Transnistria are Russians and Ukrainians. Even before the collapse of the USSR, they wanted to separate from Moldova. In 1992, an armed conflict occurred, as a result of which Transnistria was actually outside the control of Chisinau.
On March 2, Moldova celebrates the day of remembrance of all victims of the conflict.
