India’s Ministry of Information Technology and Communications chief Ashwini Vaishnav on March 2 promised to protect Indian startups from being removed from Google’s app store in an interview with Press Trust of India (PTI) .
“Our policy is very clear…our startups will receive the protection they need.”Vaishnav said, adding that the government will meet Google and the app developers who were delisted next week to resolve the dispute.
The minister said that in 10 years, India has created a strong startup ecosystem with more than 100 thousand startups and more than 100 unicorns (startups valued at more than a billion dollars).
Vaishnav emphasized that the energy of youth and entrepreneurs needs to be channelized in the right direction and cannot be left at the mercy of tech giants. “This cannot be allowed… Such delisting cannot be allowed.”said Vaisnava.
Recall that on March 1, Google said that 10 Indian companies were evading commissions despite using the Play Store platform, and began delisting some popular marriage apps in India.
The dispute erupted when Google introduced an 11-26% fee on in-app payments after anti-competition watchdog CCI ordered it to end its previous system of charging between 15-30%.
