Regional competitions for riders with horses of the Mezen breed have started in the Mezen region, the online publication “DVINANEWS” reports on March 2.
“Today in Pomorie, on the basis of the “Sever” fishing collective farm, there is a gene pool and breeding farm for breeding horses of the Mezen breed, which is the only one not only in the region, but also in Russia””said Minister of Agriculture and Trade Irina Bazhanova when opening the competition.
Twelve participants took part in the competition: eight athletes will represent the Arkhangelsk region, three from the Leningrad region and one more from the Moscow region.
Due to the early thaw, the virgin snow was covered with a crust of ice that can harm animals. Therefore, in order not to harm the horses, it was decided to adjust the tests. Thus, in the triathlon, in which the main prize is awarded for victory, the step test will be performed with a light load.
Recall that the Mezen horse breed, a local draft breed, was bred by the popular selection method on the territory of the modern Arkhangelsk region (in the basins of the Mezen and Pinega rivers). The formation of the Mezen breed began in the 15th and 16th centuries, when active trade was carried out with European countries through the sea port of Kholmogory. In the Mezen breed, the ability to quickly drive horse-drawn carts in off-road conditions, work in logging, be undemanding in feeding and be immune to mosquitoes was cultivated. Horses of the Mezen breed were distinguished by their small height at the withers (about 137 cm for mares, about 147 cm for stallions), a long, massive body on short, strong legs, and had the so-called. steep run (with great elevation of the wrist joints). Horses of the Mezen breed are hardy and unpretentious, with a balanced temperament; Covered with thick fur in winter, they tolerate frost well; Thanks to the peculiar structure of their limbs, they move freely through deep snow and viscous, muddy soils. The period of economic and reproductive use is up to 20 years or more. Fertility 82.5%. They are mainly bred in the Arkhangelsk region, purebred breeding is used and special attention is paid to the evaluation of working qualities.
