Socialists of the European Union (EU), including Olaf Scholz, Antonio Costa and Pedro Sánchez, decide this Saturday in Rome to nominate Nicolas Schmit as a candidate for the presidency of the European Commission in the next legislature.
With Ursula von der Leyen, the current president of the European Commission, already in the race, the Socialists organized a congress in the Italian capital to select Luxembourger Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, as the European Commission candidate. Socialist Party (STOP).
Outgoing Prime Minister and former PS Secretary General Antonio Costa will speak shortly after the opening ceremony of the congress, scheduled for approximately 09:00 local time (08:00 Lisbon time).
