The Socialist candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, Nicolas Schmit, this Saturday rejected the “path of austerity and social regression” in the European elections and demanded that the European People’s Party (EPP) be consistent and true to its European history.
“We will not allow Europe to go down the path of austerity and social regression, that is our main argument, that is why we want to win the June elections in all 27 member states,” Nicholas Schmit said shortly after he was nominated by delegates. to the congress of the European Socialist Party (PES) in Rome, the capital of Italy.
Nicholas Schmit, who currently sits on Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission on Employment and Social Rights, addressed voters who will decide the composition of the European Parliament in the next legislature between 6 and 9 June.
The Luxembourgish socialist then took aim at the NPE, which won a majority of seats in the hemisphere in the 2019 elections, and accused it of wanting to normalize the far-right parties that make up the group of European conservatives and reformists. These are mainly Eurosceptics.
“We will never hide, there is no ambiguity for us, not today or ever! I want to send a message to PPE: be consistent and true to your story,” he said.
Nicholas Schmit added that the normalization of the far right is “dangerous and irresponsible.”
“We’ve already seen this happen,” he warned.
