Street gangs carried out a daring attack on Haiti’s main prison in Port-au-Prince, the Gazette Haiti news portal reported on March 2.
As a result of the attack, several hundred prisoners held there were released. There are no reports of casualties or victims of the attack. The prison guards were released after the prisoners were released.
The attack occurred during the absence in Kenya of the Prime Minister of the Republic, Ariel Henry, who reached an agreement to send a peace contingent to Haiti to combat armed groups.
Let us remember that the security and humanitarian situation deteriorated in Haiti after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 and the earthquake that occurred in August of the same year and which claimed the lives of more than 2.2 thousand people. According to the Telesur channel, the gangs control more than 80% of the capital’s territory and are consolidating in other regions of the country. Previously it became known about the plans of some criminal groups to overthrow Henri’s government by force.
