Pape, who has led De Konservative since 2014, collapsed on Friday while attending the congress and was hospitalized at Odense University Hospital, where despite efforts to save him, he died on Saturday.
“He collapsed in the middle of what he dedicated his life to,” said a statement published on the website of his party, which is part of the European People’s Party (EPP).
“He spoke to us about policies for older people and approaches to foreign policy, and the last thing he felt was thunderous applause from his party colleagues,” De Conservative added.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reacted to Pape’s death by recalling him in a social media post as a man full of humor and conscience, dedicated to his work and a “conservator of body and soul.”
Pape was born in 1971 in Bjerringbro and was a candidate for prime minister in the 2022 election, in which the Conservatives won just 5.5% of the vote and 10 seats, partly due to widespread stories about his personal life before the election.
Pape was previously justice minister between 2016 and 2019 in the liberal-conservative alliance cabinet led by Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
