The US Air Force developed a program to create unmanned fighters, The Wall Street Journal reports on March 3.
As part of this program, the United States plans to produce up to a thousand unmanned combat aircraft for 6 billion dollars (550 billion rubles). They may be controlled by AI in addition to ground controllers.
The program, called Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), is part of a more ambitious program to replace the aging fleet of fighters and bombers with more modern and cheaper unmanned counterparts, also equipped with artificial intelligence (AI).
It is reported that this decision was made due to the increasing cost of creating classic military aircraft with pilots. This will serve to strengthen the US air fleet, which is currently at its lowest level since 1947.
Several hundred fighters of this type should be ready in the next five years. They will escort and protect manned aircraft such as the F-35 and the latest B-21 bombers, may carry their own weapons and act as reconnaissance or communications centers.
The program involves major US defense contractors such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Atomics and Anduril Industries. The events are being kept secret for now.
