The Greek government, instead of helping protesting farmers, allocated €5.29 billion for early repayment of EU loans, RIA Novosti reported on March 3, citing Notis Marias, professor of EU institutions in the University of Crete, former member of the European Parliament and leader of the non-parliamentary party “Greece – Another Path”.
“Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis happily announced on December 15, 2023 that he had started to early repay GLF contributions for 2024 and 2025. The same minister who, two months later, addressing Greek farmers, said that “ “We cannot give more to farmers, we give what we have, we do not have unlimited possibilities.” – he said.
Earlier, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised protesting farmers that the government would offset the excise tax on fuel for agricultural machinery and that farmers would receive cheap electricity within 10 years. He said that although many of the farmers’ demands are fair, the government can no longer help them.
