A natural fire in the US state of Texas occupied an area of 4,400 square meters. km and destroyed thousands of cattle, the South China Morning Post reported on March 2.
The fire killed at least two people and burned about 500 buildings. Rain and snow at the end of the work week helped firefighters reduce the size of the fire by 15%.
“The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create the conditions for a fire to spread rapidly.”, predicts the weather service. Southwest winds will blow at 95 to 105 kph (40 to 45 mph) and humidity will drop below 10%, according to the forecast.
Two firefighters were injured while battling a fire in Oklahoma. One was burned and the other was injured in an accident.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said individual ranchers have suffered devastating losses due to the fires. The commissioner believes the overall impact on the Texas livestock industry and consumer beef prices will be minimal.
