This is the second time in four days that Israel has fired on civilians waiting for food distribution. The new attack comes as a possible truce in the Gaza Strip is being discussed after Israel accepted an agreement that includes a ceasefire.
All that remains is Hamas’ response, which imposes some conditions. “If Israel agrees to Hamas’ demands, which include the return of displaced Palestinians to the northern Gaza Strip and increased humanitarian aid, it could pave the way for an agreement in the next 24 to 48 hours,” a senior Hamas official said.
Negotiations resumed on Sunday in Cairo. The mediating countries – Qatar, the United States and Egypt – are waiting in the coming hours for a response from Hamas to the proposal worked out in Paris at the end of January.
The proposal calls for a six-week pause in fighting and the release of 42 hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinians held by Israel.
