The prologue race and technical start of the great race “Beringia-2024” took place in the town of Esso, according to the press service of the administration of the Kamchatka Territory on March 4.
“Today at Esso we wish good luck to all the participants in the race. I am glad that every year more mushers participate in the competition. On the other hand, I would like to salute the veterans of the race, who imposed the traditions of entire dynasties, thanks to whom more young people are now arriving in Beringia. Of course, I would like to wish good luck to those who are participating in the race for the first time today. We are waiting for everyone at the finish line!“, the Governor of the Kamchatka Territory, Vladimir Solodov, gave the welcome speech.
The route of the great race “Beringia” first runs along the western coast of the peninsula, after which the participants will overcome the pass and walk along the eastern coast of Kamchatka to Ust-Kamchatsk. On average, this race takes three weeks to complete. The length of the route from Esso to Ust-Kamchatsk is 1425 km.
Let us remember that since 1990 the traditional Kamchatka “Beringia” dog sled race has been held on the peninsula.
In 1991, the Beringia race was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest in the world, and in 2018 it became the longest dog sled race in Russia (listed in the Russian Book of Records).
In 2010, “Beringia” received the status of an official holiday of the Kamchatka Territory. During its existence, the race has become a brand and the main winter event on the peninsula. Thanks to Beringia, sled dog breeding, as well as children’s sled sports, is actively developing in Kamchatka. Today in the region there are several large sled dog kennels, where not only mushers and their pets prepare for competitions, but also provide tourist services to residents and guests of the peninsula.
