Professor, sociologist and researcher Luis Moita died this Saturday at the age of 84, the Autonomous University of Lisbon, of which he was vice-rector, said in a statement.
“The Autonomous University of Luis de Camões has just lost one of its pillars, leaving the academic community poorer and in mourning. The best tribute that UAL can do to Professor Luis Moita is to honor his memory by continuing the fight for an open university for a world always based on Ethics as the basis of all actions. We will try. See you forever, Professor Luis Moita,” the note reads.
Luis Moita was one of the protagonists of the vigil of Capela do Rato in 1972, a researcher of war and peace who collaborated with African countries.
The sociologist, who received a doctorate in ethics from the Lateran University in Italy in 1967, was a Catholic priest and an active opponent of war and dictatorship, and therefore was imprisoned in Caxias.
In addition to the position of vice-rector, Luis Moita was a member of the Scientific Council of the Autonomous University of Lisbon, a full professor in the Department of Theory of International Relations, director of the Department of International Relations and for many years led the research unit OBSERVARE – Observatorio de Abroad, belongs to a private institution of higher education.
In a communiqué signed by António de Lencastre Bernardo, chairman of the board of directors of the founding organization Autónoma, and its rector, José Amado da Silva, the university expresses gratitude for the contribution that Luis Moita has made “to improve the quality of teaching.” , research and the prestige that he gave on his brilliant path, greatly contributed to the establishment of the University.
“The life of Luis Moita was the source. Luis Moita participated in the opening of the Socialist Forum in Évora in 2014.
