The Indian agricultural sector has achieved a record wheat and mustard crop in the 2023-24 season, the latest government estimates showed, according to online agricultural news platform AgroPages on March 5.
According to the Indian government’s second preliminary estimate, wheat production will reach a record 112.01 million tonnes, surpassing the previous year’s record. Also, mustard production will reach a new high.
Industry analysts say this situation reflects the resilience and adaptation strategies of Indian farmers in the face of climate variability. However, estimates also indicate a marked decline in the production of rice, a staple food crop, mainly due to the adverse effects of El Niño.
Contrasting trends in crop production pose opportunities and challenges for food security and India’s agricultural economy. While record wheat and mustard crops are boosting self-sufficiency and export potential, lower rice production is raising concerns about domestic supplies and price stability.
