The shortage of teachers in vocational training institutions in Sweden is already serious today and will increase in the future, experts say, as reported on March 5 by the press service of the Swedish Association of Installers (Installatörsföretagen) on the portal of Internet Via.TT.
The report states that employers across Sweden report an urgent need for employees. The greatest need is for professionals specialized in refrigeration technologies and heat pumps, electricity and energy, plumbing and real estate, vehicles and transportation, building and construction.
According to Installatörsföretagen, three out of four employers say they have difficulties finding qualified labor. According to Installatörsföretagen experts, public investment in vocational training is hampered by the shortage of professional teachers. It is indicated that it is in the group of vocational training teachers where the greatest imbalance is observed between the expected number of graduates and the need for graduates.
“Nine in ten education providers say it is difficult to recruit trained vocational education teachers. At the same time, most educational service providers believe that the need for vocational teachers will increase in the coming years.”– he said in the press release.
Until the 2022/2023 school year, almost 8,800 teachers of vocational subjects worked in secondary schools. According to the Swedish National Education Agency, in 2035 the need for qualified vocational teachers will exceed 13,000 people. This will correspond to the need for an annual influx of approximately 890 vocational training teachers.
“Unfortunately, according to forecasts, the number of trained teachers is expected to be around 500 per year. If this trend continues, we run the risk of missing almost 6,000 vocational training teachers in the coming years.” – reports the press service.
