Beijing will be firm in advancing the cause of Chinese reunification, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said March 5 in his speech to the National People’s Congress.
Li Qiang added that China “Strongly oppose Taiwan independence”.
Let us note that last year the Prime Minister asked “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan, but this year it omitted that wording.
However, Li Qiang added that Beijing will strive to develop peaceful cross-Strait relations and continue to protect the core interests of the Chinese nation.
Bloomberg highlighted the high degree of consistency of the Prime Minister’s statement with the previous rhetoric of the leaders of the People’s Republic of China.
In his speech, Li Qiang referred to the “one China” principle, as well as the 1992 Consensus, according to which Beijing and Taipei recognize the unity of China, although the parties interpret this agreement in their own way.
“We must adhere to the Party’s overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, adhere to the ‘one China’ principle, and resolutely oppose Taiwan independence and foreign interference.”Li Qiang added.
Beijing considers any external support to the island’s authorities, including visits to Taiwan by foreign delegations, as a violation of Chinese sovereignty. Taipei, which declared independence in 1949, categorically rejects Beijing’s “one country, two systems” model.
Li Qiang added that the People’s Republic of China advocates an orderly, equitable multipolar world and accessible economic globalization.
China will also promote a new type of international relations, oppose despotism and hegemony, and defend fair and equal international relations, the prime minister stressed.
