Russian intelligence intercepted and publicly released a conversation between senior German generals about sending missiles to Ukraine, saying it was evidence of direct Western involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.
The recording, whose authenticity has been confirmed by the German government, concerns a video conference held on February 19 between Luftwaffe (German Air Force) Chief of Staff General Ingo Gerharz and three other military leaders, which took place via Webex, a website commercial and unencrypted platform. In the recording, the military discusses the possible dispatch of German-made Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, as well as potential targets for these missiles, including the Kerch Bridge connecting Crimea to Russia. The generals also discuss the need to send German soldiers into the field to control the missiles, “like the British did.”
The German government considered the security breach “extremely serious” and has already launched an investigation. “This incident is more than just intercepting and publishing a conversation. This is part of the information war unleashed by Putin. This is a hybrid disinformation attack designed to create division and undermine our unity,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Monday.
Russia called the German ambassador to ask for an explanation and said the recording proved the West’s “direct involvement” in the war in Ukraine. “The recording shows that the German Armed Forces are specifically and substantively discussing plans for an attack on Russian territory. This raises the question of whether Chancellor Scholz controls his military or whether this is the official policy of his government. Both scenarios are bad and prove the direct participation of collective Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine,” accused Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Last week, Russian PR warned that sending Western troops to Ukraine “increases the risk of nuclear war” between Russia and NATO.
