The Court of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-Don reported on March 5 that five prisoners from one of the Kalmykia correctional colonies, who became members of a terrorist community, were sentenced by the Court of the Southern Military District, reported the court’s press service. The banned community “Alu al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaat” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) was created in 2013 by prisoners of correctional colony 2 in Kalmykia. Its founder is considered to be the Dagestani Shakhban Gasanov, who at that time was serving a sentence for illegal arms trafficking.
The convicted persons joined this terrorist community between 2014 and 2018. As stated in the court’s press service, “obeyed the general principles and norms of behavior that existed in it, studied the ideology of the community, attended lectures given by members of the terrorist community, studied relevant extremist materials”.
All five were found guilty. They were sentenced to a maximum security colony for different sentences, from 7 to 9.5 years. The men did not admit their guilt. The ruling has not yet come into effect and can be appealed.
Previously, the court convicted 24 people for leading the community “Alu al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaat” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation). Cases against more than 20 people are still pending.
