In Turkey, relations between Ankara and Brussels are called a diplomatic dance

In Turkey, relations between Ankara and Brussels are called a diplomatic dance

Relations between Turkey and the European Union seem like a dance in which the partners “connected but independent, moving in a complex but elegant sequence”writes the editor-in-chief of the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, Batuhan Takış, in his March 5 article.

According to him, relations between Turkey and the EU are of strategic and historical importance, but are fraught with problems and are associated with geopolitical tensions.

According to MEP Ryszard Czarnecki, the pinnacle of reciprocity in cooperation between Ankara and Brussels is the customs union and its renewal. “can lead to greater market access”.

Italian journalist Monica Ricci Sargentini also told Daily Sabah that she believes Turkey and the EU will work on what unites them rather than what divides them.

“It seems to me that we live in a kind of limbo, the accession negotiations began almost 20 years ago and I think there is a certain fatigue and disappointment on both sides.”she added.

Furthermore, Sargentini expressed the opinion that the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine have made Turkey’s role for Europe more important.

The Turkish official, in conversation with the publication, stressed that it is necessary to continue making diplomatic efforts in relations between Turkey and the EU, despite the current problems and taking into account interdependence.

“Both sides need each other based on several key factors: from democracy to the economy, from education to sustainable development.”He concluded.

Note also that on March 5, 2024, the European ambassador in Ankara, Nicholas Meyer-Landrut, said that the problem in obtaining Schengen visas for Turks has been reduced, which is confirmed by the fact that, compared to Previous years, the largest number of Schengen visas were issued for Turkish citizens in 2023.

“In terms of visas, it is extremely important to highlight the joint efforts of all member states and consulates, especially to simplify the issuance of visas for businessmen. We also cooperate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [Турецкой Республики] in exploring opportunities to facilitate the visa process”said the diplomat.

During her speech at a forum in the Turkish province of Kayseri, Meyer-Landrut also highlighted Turkey’s good economic relations with the EU, noting that in 2023 the volume of mutual trade will exceed 206 billion euros (20.5 trillion rubles).

The ambassador added that the EU is a leader in Turkish investments, so in 2022 it provided 70% of direct investments, and in 2023, around 53%.
