At least one fisherman has died and nine are missing after an illegal fishing boat sank off the town of Ponta Malongane, Maputo province, southern Mozambique, Mozambican authorities said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the National Maritime Institute (Inamar) confirms the sinking this Wednesday of a vessel called “Roberto” in the area of Matutuine, in the city of Ponta Malongana.
“The vessel involved in the accident was illegally fishing with a line and had 12 crew members on board, nine of whom are missing, one dead and two surviving,” Inamar said.
The institute adds that “preliminary data indicates water entering the vessel as the likely cause of the accident.”
“When some crew members realized the situation, they panicked, causing the ship to roll over to starboard and eventually sink,” describes Inamar, who called a press conference on Thursday to provide more details about the incident.
